Second of the Day 2017 Visual Design

Posted on Jul 13, 2017

Feeling motivated after getting the proof of concept going on the Second of the Day site, I opened Evernote and decided what really needed to be added to the site. What makes sense to have on there and in what order on the page? Then I sketched a rough layout on some note cards, rough layout in Photoshop (I know, I should be using Sketch - I'm old fashioned) and turned the rough layout into a more high-fidelity mock-up. Keeping in mind the video and the date/description box, about section and a giant wall of text of each month/day at the bottom.

I've been wanting to try the offset background/main content for a while now, so I tried it with this design. I like how it turned out, but I had to soften the background and use less contrasting shades of grey. The background with light grey (pretty much white) and dark grey (pretty much black) in the foreground and background was a little harsh on the eyes trying to read it.

I like using my favorite photo I've taken that year for header background - this years' photo is the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland.
